The Master Resource Report 2008-09-19

In this week's report:

Coal Feeds the Chinese Dragon's Flame - Special Report.

Fuel Shortages hit public sector needs

Airbus A380 video

I will be at the ASPO-USA Peak Oil Conference next week so there will not be a report for the week of September 22nd.

"CNBC's "Hunt for Black Gold" will Premiere on September 24th"

"Bartiromo's special addresses the issue of global thirst: which countries consume the most crude --- you might be surprised. "The Hunt for Black Gold" also looks at the peak oil theory: How much oil is left? Is the planet running dry? Some of the foremost experts say yes." This should be worth taking the time to watch. We shall see what they have to say and conclude.

The Master Resource Report 2008-09-12

In this week's report:

What is with the price of oil?

Seattle Times Editorial/Opinion and the marginal cost of that next barrel.

Pick-up Trucks and SUV's for carpooling?

"The offshore rig market will face a ``major deficit'' by 2012 and require higher rental rates..."

Bloomberg (Sept. 11th) ~ "Oil companies in June raised the price at which they plan new projects to an average $85 a barrel from $57 a barrel a year earlier." It seems safe to say that the likely hood of cheap oil is zero. This is especially true if it is coming from offshore drilling. Consider this when you read the Seattle Times Op-ed I co-authored with Jim Murray this week on offshore drilling.

I will be at the ASPO-USA oil conference in Sacramento, California from September 21st to 23rd. If you are attending let me know so we can get together.

Next week there will be a special report covering the long-term outlook for coal usage in China. The question is; can China fulfill expectations for economic growth given its dependence on coal?

The Master Resource Report 2008-09-05

In this week's report:

Guide for local authorities.

How to access this report online.

The relationship between water and energy.

This is a clear example why everyone needs to understand Peak Oil.

Bloomberg (Sept. 5th) ~ "Saudi Arabia has begun production at the Khursaniyah oil field that will eventually pump 500,000 barrels a day, said the Middle East Economic Survey, citing an unnamed official at state-owned oil company Saudi Aramco." As always we never know for sure about anything in Saudi Arabia, but this is good news for short-term supply of light crude.

From a climate change perspective this is not good news.

However, for coal prices it is great news.

Bloomberg (Sept. 5th) ~ "Coal India Ltd., the state-owned monopoly, may import the fuel this year for the first time to tide over a shortage of the commodity faced by power producers." Even though "Coal India's output is expected to rise to 405 million tons next year and 520 million tons by 2012 from 380 million tons now." Imports are expected to still need to increase by another 60 million tons by 2012. Even seemingly small percentage increases in demand on the scale of India and China result in huge volumes in absolute tonnage. SCALE!!!!
